SATURN RETURN IN ASTROLOGY

We thought we would share some information on the Saturn Return which normally takes place at approximately 29, 58 and 84.

As many of you are aware, the natal or birth chart is a snapshot of the heavens at the moment of birth.  From that moment on, the planets continue on their rotational path and these are referred to as transiting planets.  All of the planets eventually return to their location  at the moment of our birth (natal chart placement) but the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) take a long time to complete this cycle.  Saturn takes between 27-29 years to complete one full cycle.  Uranus takes 84 years and the other two outer planets (I am referred to Pluto as a planet) take much longer and we do not live long enough to experience their return.

Saturn has a profound impact in our lives.  It produces situations that can be stressful (if we so allow) and presents us with lessons whenever it (Saturn) becomes activated in our charts.  Saturn is the teacher and it presents us with a crossroad in our development.  We are forces to take a good look at our lives and we should make any needed changes.  These times can be very trying and can last a significant period of time, especially if there are other planetary forces at work during the same period.

We have touched on houses and their energies in previous posts.  Depending on which house Saturn is located in your birth chart and what aspects it is making to other planets, these particular areas of life (houses) will become activated.  The intensity and duration depends largely on the other planets that are stimulating the area, how long they transit and what aspects (aspects are angles between planets) they make to each other.

If you are going through a stressful period and you are between the ages of 28-30, 57-59 or 83-85, you likely are experiencing your Saturn’s return. At Holm Astrology, we go deep into your Astrology Chart to look at how Saturn’s return period is or will affect you.  We can assist with an understanding of the lessons being tabled by locating Saturn’s position in your chart, its natal aspects, its transiting aspects as well as its progressed aspects.  Armed with this information, you can better understand the lessons at hand.

When Saturn has completed its cycle, you can be certain that a new person will emerged with a greater understanding of self and experiences (now behind you) that should have been well learned.

EXPLORE THE UNEXPLORED

Do not fear the unknown path.  Explore all that is available.  Take a few turns while on route to expand your experience.  Sometimes we have to break new trails to grow, for life’s education is not always learned on the path most travelled.

You may be faced with a treacherous path and the route is so uneven that it is almost guaranteed that you will lose your footing.  However, if you investigate, you may find a parallel path which is much more safe but leads to the same destination.  Do not choose a dangerous route, but do not be afraid to venture off the beaten path either.

If you are willing to venture, you will gain knowledge that the masses cannot gain on their common road.  If you know that your hesitation is a result of ego or if fear of the unknown is stopping you from taking your journey, listen to your heart.  It knows the way.

We cannot grow from that which we already know or have experienced.  Find your own personal path.  You are unique so why would your journey not be unique also?

TRANSITING PLUTO SQUARE NATAL MARS

Transiting Pluto square natal Mars is a very volatile combination as the energies linked to both planets carry a lot of force with them.  Pluto’s action is often aggressive in its manners and will push you to make changes although these changes are usually favourable in the long haul.  It wants you to transform power issues and either you are the agent of change or others can be the agent of this change.

Both Pluto and Mars in Astrology have ego related issues and power struggles.

If, for example, you have transiting Pluto moving through your sixth house and Mars in the ninth, there could be power struggles involving litigation or issues with someone you work with.  This co-worker does not have to be a superior but they may be trying to get the upper hand.  You may feel the need to stand up to this person.  Perhaps changing some of the rules within the working environment might be part of their agenda.  Perhaps they are trying to implement some change to things that does not sit well with you, or other co-workers for that matter.

It might even be personal in nature and perhaps involves religious doctrines or some type of higher learning.  Perhaps this individual suggested to the superiors that certain people within the organization need further training and they want to be part of this implementation.  The ambitious spirit is at work here and what they are suggesting might involve some type of power over you specifically.

Mars and Pluto together can even be a dangerous combination.  Tempers can flair and arguments can break out.  In most cases, this will be ego oriented.  Someone is trying to pull a power rank over you and gain some type of control, or in the contrary, you may be the one initiating this and others are objecting to what you are trying to do.  If this is the case, perhaps you should talk it over with your co-workers and take in their advice before you act.  If you can solve this in a gentle manner, things might work in your favour.  If you push the issue and do not think about the effect this might have on others, you will most likely have some opposition.

Be careful while operating a motorized vehicle at this time, especially if Uranus is involved in the equation in your chart.  Acting on impulse, or when you have been involved in a disagreement or argument, is ill-advised.  As mentioned, this can be a dangerous combination and accidents can occur under this influence.  Take your time.  Make sure you give yourself time to think things over and cool down before operating a motorized vehicle, particularly if there has been a heated argument.  This aspect is often about rushing and not taking the necessary time before acting.

Use the energies properly and harness them in such a way that you can make progress with the situations at hand.  There is much energy and drive at this time.  You can accomplish a lot and make great strides with this energy.  Recognition for hard work is possible and advancement on some level is also possible.  Use these energies for the betterment of those around you and see where it takes you.  A gentle approach, if at all possible, is always advised.

GETTING BACK TO ASTROLOGICAL BASICS

Sometimes it is good to have a bit of a re-freshener with the basics of Astrology.  The fundamental basics are essential and need to be practiced even with the most advanced techniques.  In the field of Astrology, we will always be a student.  It is important to recognize that we will NEVER know all that there is to know about Astrology as it is an ongoing science.  As an Astrologer, it is essential to always be open to and welcome continued education because, as mentioned, we will be a permanent student.

The sign and house positioning of planets and significant angles (MC, ASC, DC, IC) are the most relevant in determining the areas of life (houses) and the relevant signature traits (signs) inherent with a chart.  Always look to these positions and placements to get a clear picture of the energies in the chart.  House placements and Sign positioning emphases, such as a Stellium in a house or sign, will greatly enhance that area of the chart.

The Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are determining factors in the individual’s expression and greatly enhance the character traits of an individual.  A Stellium, for example, in the sign of Leo or an emphasis in the fifth house ruled be Leo, will significantly change the character of someone with a Virgo or Capricorn Sun for example.  This is a perfect example of why some people do not fit the description of their Sun sign character traits (and for the simple fact there is so much more involved in an Astrology chart than just the Sun sign).

Tight aspects between Planets or Angles have a profound impact on the energies of the planets or angles that are aspecting.  For example, using the Leo signature again, it will be very difficult for the Sun in Leo to have the usual flair and ego consciousness if there is a square from let’s say the Moon and Saturn.  It would take hard work to bring to the forefront the emotional response of the typical Leo and its release of energy due to the square from Saturn (restrictions) and the Moon (emotions).  This individual would have to work very hard to express themselves emotionally and with great vigor in comparison to say someone with a Leo Sun with a conjunction from Mercury, Jupiter and Venus or a rising sign of Leo.

Angles or aspects from other planets help determine how challenged or with what ease an individual has in releasing the energies from that planet.  The energies are also influenced greatly by the energies of other planets.  For example, a Sun in Leo individual with a conjunction to Uranus in Leo would also be somewhat eccentric in their expression and have a very unique character.  With a Pluto conjunction this individual would express themselves in a more dynamic manner and have great power in their self-expression.  This could point to leadership abilities being enhanced, but could also indicate a domineering individual.

Astrological configurations, as well as an emphasis on an aspect or lack of aspect, will also have a profound effect on the individual’s life journey.  A person with a Grand Square will have many more challenging conditions in life than someone with a Grand Trine.  The Grand Square individual will have opposing factors within their life’s mission but can use these energies to propel them forward in life once these energies are harnessed.  The Grand Trine individual will have a greater ease in obtaining benefits than that of other individuals, but may also become complacent and sit back far too much when they should be driving themselves forward.

These are a few examples of the factors which must be considered when deciphering a natal chart   Although they may seem rudimentary, they are significant and should never be overlooked when determining factors at work in an individual’s Astrology chart.

THERE ARE ALWAYS OPTIONS

At times it would appear as though we have to be backed into a corner before we are capable of recognize an alternative route, or unexpectedly, out of the blue, an alternative route comes to light.  We can feel lost and somehow without direction before we have this recognition, and we accept the new course of action as we feel as though there are no other choices.

When the choice has been made, we do not understand why we never thought of that alternative earlier.  This make us realize that we were so enveloped or consumed by our surrounding conditions that we were blind to new ways of looking at things.  This is an easy habit to slip into and one we should certainly guard against.

Why did the new choice come to light?  Really, the answer to this is not important.  It is only important to recognize our habits and to work to changing them.   Nonetheless, no matter why we have changed our focus, we now have new options and different paths to take if we so choose.  Things seem to change in an instant and our outlook as a whole can go through just as much of a transformation.

Things often seemed to have to reach a very bleak point, and we release control because we felt there was no other alternative.  Once we have released, recognized and moved forward with this new choice suddenly everything changed.  This proves that we sometimes have to look at things from a different perspective and then new doors will open.

Do NOT “allow” negativity to enter into the equation.  There are always options.  Sometimes that option is simply to let go of control.  Whatever the options, we have to be open to them.  In the worst of conditions, things can magically turn themselves around.    Do not become dismayed and tarnished by life’s events.  They are events; they are not a reflection of you.

Enjoy the ride no matter how rough and know that something more promising is just around the next corner.

RETROGRADE MOTION PLANETS

Retrograde motion is a phenomenon that actually occurs quite frequently.  Our Earth is tilted on its axis at 23 ½ degrees, and the planets are in a continuous motion in the skies.  They rise in the east and set in the west due to our Earth’s rotation.  The planets in our solar system travel along the ecliptic and because of our Earth’s rotation move from west to east.

At some point in this rotation the planets appear to slow down and actually stop their movement in the heavens.  This appearance of non-movement is known as the stationary position in Astrology.  The planets then appear to move backwards and this is termed retrograde motion.  This is an illusion and does not actually happen.  It only appears to happen.

These times of retrograde motion can last for a period of a couple of weeks up to several months depending on the planet involved.

If the placement of the planet which is in retrograde makes an aspect to one of the planets in our birth chart their energies are triggered.  The type of energy that is triggered depends entirely on the aspect between the planets involved together with the houses that becomes activated during the contact.

Quite often a Planet such as Pluto will go into retrograde motion and then begin to move forward again and then go back into retrograde two or three times before it returns to direct motion and passes beyond the connection with the planetary force it has touched.  The first contact when a planet goes retrograde is always the most intense energy period.  It is as though something has been activated and we act accordingly.   Each subsequent contact is less intense and the final contact is usually associated with coming to terms with whatever took place as a result of energies of the initial contact.

When Pluto makes a contact to an angle in our natal chart, especially the Ascendant or the Midheaven, its energies can have a profound effect in our lives.  Often the retrograde motion lasts a month or two and then passes over the same degree only to go retrograde again and pass over the same degree again.  The total orb of influence can last six months to one year.  This will transform whatever is being suggested through the sign on the angle and the aspects from other natal positions.  Great transformations occur during such events and we will go through changes both internally and externally that alter our lives, often permanently.

To find out more on retrograde planets in your birth chart or retrograde planets affecting planets or angles in your chart, you should locate these movements in your ephemeris or on line.  A transit and progression chart can be prepared and will provide great details of the affects.

Currently Uranus and Neptune are retrograde when we posted this on November 8, 2017.  As of January 3, 2018, there will be no planets in retrograde motion and this will continue until March 10, 2018 when Jupiter goes retrograde.  By the end of July, 2018, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto will all be retrograde.
