Suicidal Tendencies

This is a very touchy subject and one that is looked at with great respect and care.

For those that have or are contemplating suicide, please share your thoughts and pain with a professional.  Please know that the only guarantee in life is change.  Often the greatest times of stress are pathways leading to the greatest rewards in life.  We have often heard it said that....”Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”  This is a powerful statement.  Death is certainly permanent and suicidal thoughts are certainly temporary (much to the sufferer’s denial).  We have to question, however, the word “solution”.  How is suicide a solution?

For those that are shattered by loved ones contemplating suicide, it is imperative that you do not own someone elses’ thoughts or decisions.  You, in no way, are responsible for these thoughts or actions.  We have no control over other people’s choices.  The best we can do it to ensure them that we are there to offer love, compassion and whatever we can offer to assist on the road to recovery.

Our brain is an integral part of our human vehicle-- no different that our lungs or heart.  Ignoring a heart attack will not void the damage an attack may cause.  Ignoring suicidal thoughts will not create a solution.

Conditions in life can accelerate to the point of feeling that there seems to be no way out of the current challenging circumstances.  For you and me, we can rationalize and find that glimmer of hope that assists in turning our point of view from hopeless to hopeful.  Individuals that are suicidal believe that they are doing family members a service by ending their lives.  They feel their situations are hopeless and that no one cares.  They do not understand that the next turn in the road can move them into a completely new and different direction.

Reassurance that you are there to listen, that you care and that you want them to choose life is important.  Do not be shocked by what you hear and do not judge.  Irrational thoughts cannot be rationalized.

If you feel the situation is an emergency, deal with it as such.

If a loved one lost control of their vehicle due to speed and you had previously warned them that speed kills, would you feel responsible for this accident?  ......of course not.  Why then, if you have been supporting someone who has had suicidal tendencies and they have lost their battle, should you feel responsible for this loss?  A terrible loss, yes but certainly not your responsibility.

As you care for others, be sure to care for yourself.  Always stay within your personal limits if someone is threatening you with suicide and be sure to talk to someone.  There are many help lines and groups to assist you in sharing your feelings and experiences.
