Most of us have aging parents, grandparents
and some of us are entering our senior years.
It can be difficult dealing with the aging process and the issues that
go along with it.
Those of us who have a relatively healthy
body and are able to move without restriction should appreciate this
miracle. Regardless of physical limitations,
it is important to keep as active as we possibly can and this includes mental
exercise. We need to continually
exercise our brains just as much as we need to exercise our bodies.
For those of us caring for elderly parents
or grandparents, the experience is not always a pleasurable one. For some, our loved ones are no longer the
people they used to be. It is difficult
to have to stand back and watch mental and physical ailments slowly steal our
loved ones from us and there is little we can do about it. It is important that we continually reassure
them that we still care for them and hold them dear to our hearts. Remind yourself when you are frustrated with
situations, how difficult it must be for them.
Unfortunately, for their sake, we should keep our emotional responses under
wrap to help them through their difficult transformations.
So many of our seniors suffer from and
recognize their memory loss. This
realization simply aggravates the condition that much more. Understandably, they fight to maintain
control of their lives. It is so important
to be aware of the effects of these diseases.
Educate yourself. You cannot allow
yourself to become angry or frustrated with those that suffer these debilitating
diseases.
There are many of these patients that live
in long care homes and receive little to no support from their families. Although they forget, and maybe not even
recognize their family members, they still enjoy a visit “from that kind
stranger” that came today. Small actions
on our part can have an enormous impact on them, even if only temporarily.
Give of yourself when you can. One day if we are lucky enough, we may reach
our own ripe old age and it would be nice if our loved ones did not abandon
us. Remember we all walk that same
road. How we deteriorate is yet to be
determined and how are last days are experienced may be in other people’s
hands.
Live a giving life right to the end and
help where you can. There is little to
lose and so much to gain. Live for today
as it’s all we truly have.
