APPLYING AND SEPARATING ASPECTS IN THE NATAL CHART

There are three different types of aspects concerning the planetary movements in the snapshot of the Natal or Birth Chart. 

These are:

1.            applying aspects, (planets moving together to form an aspect);

2.            separating aspects, (planets moving away from one another); and

3.            stationary aspects, (planets that have been in retrograde motion and are now motionless). 

Today we are going to look at the applying and separating aspects in the Natal Chart.

All planets whether retrograde or direct in the birth chart, will either be forming an aspect with another planet or separating from aspect to another planet, the closer to exact the aspect, the stronger its influence is in our lives.  

There are some planets that make no aspects, although rare.  If they are not making major aspects (sextile, trine, conjunction, inconjunct, square or opposition), they are very powerful in the natal chart.  We will be discussing this at a later date.

Many Astrologers believe that a separating aspect deals with past events, or if you like, “finished business”.  This would pertain to something that has already been dealt with and will eventually fade over time.  Some Astrologers believe that the actual acknowledgement and correction took place before birth and we have already made adjustments to overcome whatever the energies of the two planets involve describe.  The degrees that separate the planets describe how powerful that aspect is in the chart.  The closer to exact degree the aspect, the more powerful the energy is.  Perhaps with a separating aspect, the flavour of the aspect is one of the last things that were set in motion in a previous lifetime, but this is speculative. 

Astrologers understand the significance as the aspect and its degree and will define its intensity and help delineate the meaning of any particular influence in the Birth Chart. 

When planets are applying, it is understood that the faster moving planet is moving towards the slower moving planet and suggests unfinished business that will have to be rectified during the course of this lifetime.  Once again, the closer the aspect, the more apparent and pressing the energies of the planets involved.  We have come into this life to learn and address the suggested issue and come to terms with whatever the planets and aspects suggest.

The applying aspects become stronger as time passes, intensify and push us in directions that will assist us in defining the energies involving these two planetary.  These conditions are dealt with after birth.  Applying aspects are suggestive of future endeavours that should be approached and dealt with and transits that touch on these planetary links can intensify the birth condition and push you towards a resolution. 

This is not to say that all aspects between planets are challenging; far from it.  You have to look at the planets involved and decipher how well they work together and what aspects are involved before making a judgement call on how the energies will affect one another. 

It should also be understood that a tight square or opposition in the birth chart has been set in motion in this life for us to overcome and could therefore be considered a challenging but advantageous aspect forcing us to make adjustments that in turn enhance development.  Without challenging conditions in the birth chart (and there are charts that are very easy flow with many trines and sextiles) this life offers minimal achievement in life.  It is the challenging aspects that push us forward and challenge us to find a resolution.   

Remember the tighter the aspect, the more significant its influence is in our lives.  When deciphering a chart it is very important to take this into consideration.  For example, a conjunction between Mars and Pluto is a very strong aspect, but if they are separating from one another and are out by 8 degrees, then an aspect of let’s say Venus conjunct the Sun, (which is a much softer aspect) which is applying and only out by 23 minutes would have a far greater influence than the aspect between Mars and Pluto described above.

DELIGHT IN TRUTH

Let’s stop for a moment and reflect on all of the good that surrounds us.  Refrain from taking a vantage point that there are things missing in your life, or that life is difficult. 

We want only to focus on abundance and all of those events that make us feel fulfillment and times of love shared. 

Take a moment to feel thankful for your life, each of its events and intricacies, the ability of the mind and body to function, our daily pleasures, the magnificence and beauty of nature......  Be aware and appreciative of your ability to filter thoughts and act on them.  Be thankful for the tranquility that the mind can experience through acts of meditation, although this tranquility is generated from a deeper source.  Be thankful for all of the resources at your disposal which are necessary to function and move forward each day.

 

Take a moment to reflect on your own personal life (specific to you).  The gifts that have been laid in front of you, in reality, are far too numerous to list.  Take an honest look at your life and all the wonder it contains. 

Be thankful for all the challenges that life provides you with for these are your stepping stones for growth.

Find that place within that brings you peace and contentment.  Reside in the moment and appreciate that during this very moment you need nothing more than what you have to live....... very this moment. 

Embrace your chosen life and all its complexities as well as its rewards ever present if you are willing to open you heart to experience them.  Above all else, be thankful for your connection with life itself and the oneness that exists in all things.  Understand the truth of this oneness and know that you are an integral part of it.

THE MINOR ASPECTS - Sesquiquardrate

We are continuing our look at the minor aspects in Astrology. The Sesquiquadrate is an 135 degrees aspect and it has an orb of influence of no more than 2 degrees.  The tighter the aspect to being direct the more powerful the influence.  This is considered a minor aspect and is said to have similar qualities to the square and the semi-square.  There is a confusing quality, however, to the Sesquiquadrate.

This minor aspect is said to carry the qualities of Uranus.  Its energies stimulate the desire to break free and to be a non-conformist.  This aspect also carries the qualities of Saturn as it stimulates the need for structure, definition and discipline.  Put these two energies together and it is no wonder that the Sesquiquadrate is a little vague.  It is similar to someone fighting between the qualities of an adult and of a child, molded into one.  One part of this individual wants to rebel against the structure and discipline yet another part of their personality wants and needs the structure and discipline.  Because of these opposing behaviours, there is tension and unpleasant behaviours linked to the Sesquiquadrate.

It operates at its best when there is outside assistance from other planets linked to the planets involved.  For instance, if there were a smooth flowing trine from Mercury to aid in finding a solution to the typical issues face by an adolescent.  Saturn wants to contain the rebellious nature of Uranus, as there will be times when the choices made by Uranus’s rash behaviour can be a bit disturbing.  Uranus wants to reform and challenge orthodox Saturn to build something new and let go of old outdated ways and thinking. 

As you can see there will be quite a conflict of ideas and Saturn wants to win out because the tried and tested ways work better than Uranus’s ideas of bringing something new to the table.  We are never certain which will win out, however.  This is why we need assistance from another sources.  Perhaps Neptune can add to the flavour of the combatants and add a mystical quality to the disarray of these concepts.  Perhaps visualization and intuition hold the answer.

One thing is for certain, it will take some time to resolve the conflict and for the conditions to evolve.  Taking into consideration the planetary energies involved and the house placements will help to understand what the problem might be and perhaps offer some solution to the dilemma.  Many Astrologers continue to feel that the energies of the Sesquiquadrate are similar to the semi-square in that it is a minor irritant that would go unnoticed without other challenging conditions within the horoscope to emphasize the issue.

PARENTS WITH CHILDREN MATURING INTO ADULTHOOD

For all parents there comes a time in our lives that our children are maturing and developing into adulthood.  This is a challenging time as well as an exciting time.  We, as parents, have experience and we want to lend a gentle hand of guidance and offer the security that our children still need, although apparently they may not perceive our gestures in the light that they were intended.

Our maturing children are entering this new stage of life with their eyes wide open.  They are ready and willing to grab hold of opportunities as well as take gambles with relative ease.  They will learn valuable lessons because of this attitude.  As parents, we support them.  We offer advice although subjective in nature and in a gentle fashion, and we guide them along their venture as best we can.  They are open to everything although it may not appear this way and everything we say and do provide them with something of significance even though they may seem reluctant on the surface.

It can be a difficult as a parent to stand by their side giving support to their plans and dreams as we know that this journey will be a challenging one.  It is wise to offer advice and then step back to allow them to digest as insistence on our part will only be met with frustration and aggression.  In many cases, at this age they are head strong and will follow their own judgement and will advance in their chosen direction regardless of our input, so we have to know when to let go and step aside.

As far as assistance and we are primarily speaking of financial assistance right now, we can help when necessary but hopefully the ground work of responsibility was laid long ago.  With ground work in place, we step back and trust in the lessons already taught. 

If they acknowledge and are appreciative that we have provided them with loving support through guiding step or financial support to make life easier than our gestures are not in vain.  If on the contrary they waste this opportunity and squander our efforts then we will know better when the next time arrives, as under these circumstances they undoubtedly will.  There are always times to help and then it is important to recognize that there are times when our financial generosity is not helpful; it is actually detrimental to their maturation and development of self-reliance.

When these young individuals meet up with life’s challenges which you know they will, the best we can do is offer our emotional support and guidance and then stick with them through thick and thin regardless of their decision.  They need emotional support during these trying times and we are well equipped to assist them in this manner for no one loves them more.  When they make mistakes and take what we consider wrong turns in life, they need our emotional support even more, but we also have to keep in mind the workings of the universe and that things happen for a reason.  The school of hard knocks always has their best interests at heart.

You do however have to know when the time is right to stop subsidizing their finances and let them stand on their own two feet.  Let them take life by the horns and run with it.  What great lessons these are in self-sufficiency, confidence, etc. 

Being a parent and offering loving support never ends and our children have to know that they can always depend on us for this type of support.  Whatever you felt was missing in your youth can now be utilized with mature insight and worldly education.  We have all walked similar roads to that which are growing children now venture.  Support them every step of the way but let them be responsible for themselves and their actions.

HEALING & NURTURING

Taking care of others can be done on many levels and can be carried out by anyone regardless of age, gender or even geographical long distance. 

Loving and nurturing others is our prime objective in this life, but before we can truly heal others, we have to spend time on ourselves. 

In order to be healthy physically and emotionally, it is important to review and recognize any problematic conditions that we are hanging on to.  We cannot remove or heal ailments until we recognize that they are there and recognize that most conditions have been created within are a result of our attitude and thought patterns.

Problems often appear after a traumatic incident or stressful period in our lives.  If not fully dealt with immediately, these events may scar us on a very deep emotional level which eventually materializes as a health issue.  No matter how traumatic the incident may have been and regardless of who can be “blamed” from the event, it is our choice whether we harbour negative emotions (anger, blame, rage, self pity, etc.) around the events and whether we choose to make these events our own (make them personal and own them).  We have to face them head on, and accept that they have happened.  We may not have initiated the event but it is certainly our choice whether we will hang on to the experience and allow it to keep influencing our life. It is our choice if we are going to let it go, move forward and accept the lesson but not own it.  The acceptance and release will also influence our lives but in a much more positive way than holding on.

We have the power to heal all wounds and these capabilities come from within.  We will not find the true solutions to our challenge from external forces.  Only we can release ourselves from the grips of our experience and allow the past to stay in the past.  Forgiving is part of the solution, but in many cases there is something linked to forgiving ourselves as often we take on the events, emotionally connecting to the events and make them personal.

Revenge is always anti-climactic and never provides the satisfaction anticipated.  It only services to tether us to the raw emotions of the past.  Forgiveness allows us to let go and move forward.  Forgiveness is essential for our personal healing.  Forgive for your own personal sake, if for no other reason.

There is a part in most of us that wants to assist others in their times of trouble.  A caring, nurturing friend is a wonderful medicine.  Loving and nurturing others is our prime objective in this life, but those that we offer assistance to must first want to help themselves.  Unfortunately, there are people that perpetually live under a negative attitude and they refuse to take responsibility and to do the work necessary to move beyond their less than positive focus.

Healing can be done on many levels and through positive focus and receiving healing energy from those who want to assist, healing can begin.  We are all connected on some level or another.  We share feelings, thoughts and can transfer energy that can assist those in need.  Each one of us are conduits for healing energy but the acceptance of these energies will only flow without restriction when the recipients have cleared any obstructions they have created from within.

Be a conduit for healing energy.  Send out loving vibrations to those that are in need.  We can be this agent by offering loving, light and healing energy.

MINOR ASPECTS - The Quintile

The Quintile is considered a minor aspect in Astrology.  When two planets or significant points are in Quintile with one another, the angle is 72 degrees and 144 degrees for the Bi-Quintile.  We will be discussing only the Quintile in this post.  This aspect has a very tight orb of influence and you should give it no more than one degree of separation (71-73 degrees).

The Quintile is an aspect linked to inspiration, talent on a very individual level and creativity.  This talent is considered to be God-given and is not necessarily a learned art.  It is often unique to the individual and the creative style is distinctive and sets the individual’s talent apart from the rest.  It is said that the Quintile’s energies are very common with the energies of Mercury and is linked with the mind and the thought process.  There is uniqueness in the work of these individuals and they often pursue their distinctive style relentlessly.  It is as if they are obsessive in their behaviour and there is a need to master their particular art or technique.

The talent is uncommon and in most cases it is not something that can be learned from sources outside of self.  Perhaps they are being guided through spirit.  Many of us have a Quintile or two in our charts.  This is common, but to have more than two and to have them tightly configured is not common.  You have to have at least three Quintiles in your chart to experience this influence we are speaking of.  If the progressed chart has many of these Quintiles and Bi-Quintiles, it could be a talent that is being brought to the surface, although it should be in the birth chart first, as this is a blueprint for the life of the individual.

Those that have this God-given creative talent may use their inborn knowledge or talent to assist others.  The expression of the Quintile would be indicative of the energies of the planets involved, the signs and houses that these planets are located in.  You can also look to the natal chart and others linking aspects that might add to the flavour of these unique aspects.  Any planet that forms a tight aspect to one of the planets or points in this configuration would also add to the flavour and offer some insight into the possible ramifications and outlet for such talents to be released.

The need for these people to understand these inborn traits is great and as indicated earlier there is an obsessive quality linked to uncovering their full potential.  This intense search can become a life-long passion and they will not stop short of complete understanding and utilizing the talent in question.  They have an obsessive need to learn their talent completely, to look at it from every angles.  This learning or search can actually intensify as time passes.

As a parent, if you child has this emphasis in their chart, it is important to understand the area of life that is accentuated.  It is suggested that you do your best to help your child uncover these abilities and never dismiss these talents or sway your child away from learning their full potential in these areas as indicated by their chart.  These are unique individuals and have something important to offer the world.  They should be allowed to express themselves in whatever unique fashion that suits them best.
