Appreciation

When we sit back and enjoy the comforts of everyday living and reflect on our busy day, it is important to place focus on the world around us and not allow our complacency to overshadow the truth. It is difficult to truly see the outside world and view it as it truly is when we live in our little sheltered corner of the world. We, in the developed areas of the world, are relatively filtered from... the ravaging violence and human slaughter that surrounds us.

Be thankful every day for your little piece of heaven, your tranquil territory and never pass by the wonderment of your routine life. It is easy to become blind to the outside world, and to be fixated on the minute distasteful events that we allow to create interference in our relative ease. Stop for a moment next time you are complaining about the cost of the groceries you just purchased, or the taxes you have to pay. Think in terms of what other people in third world countries are faced with every day. They are struggling daily with what we would consider simple survival skills. We obsess over what technology to buy our children to go back to school while many others in our world scramble to find food to feed their families or a safe place to hide their children, at least for today. School is not even a consideration.

It is difficult to comprehend others’ need for the bare necessities when we live in a cocoon surrounded by luxuries that we call common place. Next time you complain about your shortages and the difficulties you struggle with, think about the atrocities carried out daily all around the world. Reflect on how fortunate we are to be living this life of comfort and plenty.

Pay heed to the bountiful life that we enjoy and be thankful for all you have. Look at what you have (clean running water, shelter, electricity, freedom of choice and speech), not at what is missing. Know that you are blessed. How many would do anything to have your life, just for a day, never mind for a lifetime. Open your eyes and your heart and behold the wonderment of your life.
