ASTROLOGICAL DIGNITIES

The Astrological dignities (sometimes referred to as the core essential dignities) reflect the comfort, strength and effectiveness of a planet’s energies based on the Zodiac sign it occupies.  Some signs are easy flow energy and others create uneasy flow of energies for the planets.

 The four dignities are natural rulership, detriment, exalted and fall.

 Each planet has a natural ruler, sometimes referred to as its domicile. 

 NATURAL RULERSHIP

 The natural rulership is as follows:

      1.       Leo is ruled by the Sun

2.       Cancer is ruled by the Moon

3.       Virgo and Gemini are ruled by Mercury

4.       Libra and Taurus are ruled by Venus

5.       Aries is ruled by Mars and Scorpio is co-ruled by Mars

6.       Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter and Pisces is co-ruled by Jupiter

7.       Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and Aquarius is co-ruled by Saturn

8.       Aquarius is ruled by Uranus

9.       Pisces is ruled by Neptune

10.  Scorpio is ruled by Pluto.

 Please keep in mind that the co-rulers were put in place prior to the discovery of the actual ruling planets, Pluto, Neptune and Uranus.  In my view, the current rulership should be applied not the co-rulers.  Example Aquarius co-ruled by Saturn does not match energies near as well as Uranus’ energies.  Saturn and Uranus have, in many ways, opposing energies.

 DETRIMENT

When a planet is found in the opposite sign of its natural rulership, this is referred to as detriment (also known as exile).

When in detriment, a planet is not at ease, and its energies are harnessed or at a lower influence. This is similar to when planets are in retrograde with the exception of Saturn.

      1.       Sun is in detriment in Aquarius

2.       Moon is in detriment in Capricorn

3.       Mercury in detriment in Sagittarius

4.       Venus in detriment in Scorpio

5.       Mars in detriment in Libra

6.       Jupiter in detriment in Gemini

7.       Saturn in detriment in Cancer

8.       Uranus in detriment in Leo

9.       Neptune in detriment in Virgo

10.  Pluto in detriment in Taurus

EXALTED

A planet that is exalted or in exaltation brings awareness energies and functions at a higher octave. 

1.       Sun is exalted in Aries

2.       Moon is exalted in Taurus

3.       Mercury is exalted in Virgo

4.       Venus is exalted in Pisces

5.       Mars is exalted in Capricorn

6.       Jupiter is exalted in Cancer

7.       Saturn is exalted in Libra

8.       Uranus is exalted in Scorpio

9.       Neptune is exalted in Leo

10.  Pluto is exalted in Aries

FALL

When a planet is in the fall, its energies are considered to be in a weakened state.  The Fall position is opposite the exalted position in Astrology.

1.       Sun is in fall in Libra

2.       Moon is in fall in Scorpio

3.       Mercury is in fall in Pisces

4.       Venus in fall in Virgo

5.       Mars in fall in Cancer

6.       Jupiter in fall in Capricorn

7.       Saturn in fall in Aries

8.       Uranus in fall in Taurus

9.       Neptune is in fall in Aquarius

10.  Pluto is in fall in Libra

It should be noted that all of the planets, regardless of their dignities, should be studied in relation to the aspects stemming from other planets and angles in the birth chart.  These can mitigate any dignity.

For example, if a planet in exaltation having several planets or angles (Ascendant, Midheaven, Imum Coeli and the Descendant) in challenging aspect connected to it will not function as well as a planet that has some or many easy flow aspects making contact.  A planet in detriment or fall that is aspected by planets or angles with easy or opportunistic aspects will function easier than a planet with challenging aspects.  Again, all Astrological functions must be taken into account when deciphering a natal Astrology chart.

LIVE TODAY LIKE IT’S YOUR LAST

We have all heard the saying “live today like it’s your last” or something similar.  If this were the case, how WOULD you live today? 

 

Would you make any changes or just move forward in the same direction and with the same intension?

Would you recognize the true value of friendships? 

 

Would you spend more time with family and pay particular attention to those that you love?

Would you explore your inner consciousness through deeper connections perhaps through meditation techniques? 

 

Would you go to church or pray more or connect more with a spiritual journey?

 

We are all here for a short walk.  Time can pass with little notice.  As we age, we may ask ourselves more questions such as those above. Why do we have to wait until later in life to become aware? 

 

It does not matter what age we are currently, we have an expiry date, and there are no guarantees that you will reach old age.

ASPECTS WITH SUN IN SCORPIO 2026

We focused on the Sun in Scorpio in our article on October 19, 2026 – https://www.holmastrology.com/post/sun-in-scorpio-2026  

 

Today we are focusing on the transits that will affect Sun in Scorpio over the coming year.

 

Transiting Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are all transiting through the early degrees of varying signs affecting those with their Sun in the early degrees of Scorpio. 

 

This does not mean that the progressions and other transits are not affecting those with their Sun in the mid to later degrees of Scorpio, as there is a great likelihood that these charts are being enhanced by other indicators.

 

In our articles, we always touch on the outer planets because they have a profound effect on each of us and move very slowly often being an indicator or a change and disruption depending on the aspects involved. These can last up to three years depending on the positions of natal planets in the birth chart.  As a result, they have great impact on our lives.

 

Transiting Uranus currently is in retrograde at 4° in Gemini, making a Quincunx to the Sun in the early degrees of Scorpio. 

 

Neptune is currently also in retrograde at 2° in Aries, also making a Quincunx to Scorpio, and Pluto at 3° Aquarius in direct motion is making a Square to those with their Sun in the early degrees of Scorpio. 

 

Uranus and Neptune (both making a Quincunx) create a Yod and Pluto making a Square all suggest that a challenging time is at hand or is just starting or is just finishing off, depending on the degree of your Sun in Scorpio.  If your Sun is in the early degrees of Scorpio, you likely know what I am speaking of.  The individual birth chart, however, needs to be reviewed to see the full picture. The birth chart is our potential moving forward and when activated by transit or progression, the potential in the birth chart is triggered or activated.

 

The Yod we mentioned is very challenging, often suggesting a crisis which you must deal with and the need for reaching deep within, often finding solutions through a deeper source. A turning point will be reached after which those affected will move forward in a much more positive manner, often activating a spiritually enlightening experience.

 

The Square to Pluto, depending on the houses involved, will speak in terms of a challenging situation where you may have to leave something behind and move forward transforming those parts of yourself that no longer serve your journey or deep issues that might not have been properly dealt with previously. These now surface so that a resolution can be found.  Change on a deep level and dealing with what might be referred to as taboo situations is now what must be undertaken.  The transformations that take place on the other side of these difficulties can enhance life and change situations that needed revitalization and regeneration. 

 

Each Scorpio touched by these transits will deal with this transformation in their own personal manner. What goes on beneath the surface, because you are a Scorpio, may not be revealed to others, but change, nonetheless, is almost inevitable. 

 

The aspects to Sun in Scorpio 2026 from the outer planets suggest challenging life lessons but the lessons will teach valuable, needed information for change and transformation.

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOR

Human behavior varies so significantly from one individual to another that trying to comprehend the “why” behind behavior can be almost impossible.  We are all different and convey our message in different tones, under different conditions and with varying degrees of sentiment and emotion.

 

Many conversations take place spontaneously in the moment, although others are carefully thought out and practice ahead of time. 

 

With some people, they are that fickle that what is said in this moment can be taken with a grain of salt in the next. 

 

If a serious conversation triggers worry and anxiety, a calm, caring demeanor can help the situation and make the other person more comfortable.  Sometimes these conversations can be a heads up for our benefit and in other situations there is a need for the speaker to unload.  An ear for listening and maybe gentle reassurance is all that is needed.

 

How do we truly understand human behavior? 

 

Unless we have taken steps in someone else’s shoes, we likely have no concept of their journey. Words can convey a sentiment, but the meaning is interpreted differently by each set of ears that listen. We can only understand from our own vantage point and experience.

 

When we verbally dump our baggage, who are we really talking to?

 

The only person that truly understands what we are say is self.

 

Compassion connects us even if we cannot fully perceive what someone else is trying to say. We will never truly understand human behavior and perhaps that understanding is not important.

 

Understanding our own behavior should be highlighted. Self-understanding can help alleviate concerns or stressors we may experiences. 

 

We are complex creatures open to suggestion, at least most of us. We can learn from one another, especially when we discuss with others who have experienced what we are going through.  Experience is the best teacher. 

 

Understanding human behavior might be difficult, but it is made easier with a compassionate heart.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE

The first thing that comes to mind when we hear “Celebration of Life” is that someone has died and now we get-together to celebrate who they were and what they achieved in this life. 

 

It is rather unfortunate that we do not celebrate life before it comes to an end.  Why do we have to wait for people to pass over to celebrate? 

 

Would it not be more appropriate to celebrate life by living?

 

Perhaps, we can celebrate life in each and every moment.  Let’s recognize what we have and what we experience regularly.

 

Life could be so much worse.  Look around you, both close to home and on the world stage.  We have countless reasons to celebrate.

 

Do not let those that want to divide us steal our peace. There can be too much stress and anxiety if we focus on all the hostility, critical discourse, and derogatory statements. Scroll by the insults and divisiveness. The first step is to create peace by starting in your own little corner of the world.  

 

Those in positions of power must find ways to create widespread peace, not through violence and war but through caring and compassion.  If we all worked together, we could create a positive, peaceful place for all to live. It takes more than money but the wealthy can help.  It takes an attitude of equality and effort, no matter who we are.

 

Even in our close relationships, do not let those that are unhappy or focused in the wrong areas of their life steal your peace. Remind yourself where those comments and actions are generated.  

 

There is an answer, but this answer begins with you.  Your efforts are not inconsequential.

 

We can help one another. Let’s walk together rather than focusing on our differences and divisive messages. Focus is our primary tool.  Use it wisely. Focus on a celebration of life.

NATAL AND TRANSITING PLUTO

Pluto in the natal chart has a lot to do with change and transformation.  The sign it is in and the house where it is located in the natal chart will influence Pluto’s energies (as with any planet).

 

The birth chart is a snapshot of the heavens at the moment of birth.  This natal snapshot never changes.

 

The word transformation is the best description of Pluto’s energy, as it indicates the area of life where the foremost shifts will take place.  There are no halfway measures when we are speaking of Pluto.  Likely something must come to an end for something new to begin.  The change that takes place, in many cases, completely replaces what used to be in place.

 

In most cases, the shifts experiences are forceful, because Pluto has to do with power and dynamic energies.  Much will also depend on how Pluto is being utilized in the birth chart.  Does it have many aspects from other planets to it? 

 

Are the planetary energies associated with Pluto well integrated with the other planets by aspect? 

 

Are these other planets in Square or Opposition or are they in Trine or Sextile to Pluto? 

 

Do the energies merge well together or do they signal difficulties emerging? 

 

It should be understood that any challenging aspects often indicate life lessons that won’t easily be forgotten and we must deal with them.  The lessons learned will be valuable. 

 

The more gentle or favorable aspects, although the planets involved must also be analyzed, can indicate transformations in positive terms, although much depends on if we are ready for these changes to take place. 

 

The Natal chart tells the story of what can be expected when transits planets hit our Natal positions in our birth chart.

 

The natal planets never change in our birth chart but the planets continue moving and once the snapshot of the heavens has been taken and the position of the planets noted for our birth chart, the transit of the planets begin.

 

When Pluto is in transit, you can expect major transformations to take hold in the area of life, (house positions) linked with the planets or angles within the birth chart.  Even if there are no other natal or transiting planets in the house transiting Pluto is transiting through, there will still be changes that take place especially when it crossed the house cusp and moves into the next house. 

 

When transiting Pluto reaches another planet or angle in the Natal chart, this area will become highlighted along with the energies of transiting Pluto and the other planet or angle which is involved.

 

Pluto’s energies are transformational and regenerative. Some major change can cause disruption but you will know in your heart that what “was” no longer fits your evolutionary path and dynamic change is required.  As mentioned, there are no halfway measures when it comes to the transit of Pluto and change is almost unavoidable, but over time you will realize that it was necessary.

 

The Natal blueprint must be closely studied to give a complete and comprehensive explanation of what will unfold. Whatever does unfold may take up to three years to fully comprehend with Pluto. 

 

Pluto is often unstoppable, and it is best to swim with the current of change it is presenting.

THERE IS MUCH MORE TO ASTROLOGY THAN YOUR SUN SIGN

Nearly everyone knows their Sun sign (the Zodiac sign they were born under), but did you know that in astrology it runs much deeper than your sun sign? 

 

Some individuals are born on the cusp of the previous or next sign, depending on what day you were born.  Those born under these circumstances are known as cusp sign sun personalities.  They carry traits of both the sign they were born under and the second cusping sign.

 

The Sun has an orb of influence of 16°, and every sign encompasses 30°.  For example, if your Sun was at 1° Aquarius, you would have 9° Aquarius and 7° Capricorn tendencies (because the sun sign prior to Aquarius is Capricorn).  Another example would be if your Sun was at 29° Aquarius, you would have 9° Aquarius and 7° Pisces (because the sun sign after Aquarius is Pisces). 

 

The Sun sign defines who we are internally and those that know us well can relate to the inner Sun sign character traits. (Our outside personality or the personality we show to the world, is defined by our Ascendant, also known as the Rising Sign.  But this will be discussed a little later.)

 

We also have our Moon which also has its own sign. The Moon’s sign in our chart also has a 30° range.  The Moon represents our emotional response and the feelings we have about life in general.  The Moon is our emotions, our sensitivity and our way of dealing with the world through our emotional response.  For example, if you have the Moon in Cancer, you are very sensitive to your environment, family concerns are an important part of what you relate to and your response to sensitive issues is an emotional one.  Cancer tries to keep the emotions intact, but it’s not easy and sometimes they just surface no matter how hard the Cancer Moon tries to bury them. 

 

On the contrary, if you have your Moon in Capricorn, your emotional response to life situations is kept totally under control, and you seem to be well contained when it comes to emotional outbursts of expression. The lack of showing emotion, however, only masks hidden emotions.

 

We also have what is known as our rising sign or Ascendant as mentioned earlier. The rising sign is our reaction or statement that we show to the world, especially when we first meet people and face experiences in the external world.  In many cases, the rising sign is also suggestive of how we look and our body shape, although with so many now using medical procedures to change their appearance, it is not as accurate as it was years ago. 

 

Our external expression to the world with an Aries Rising sign would be quite different from say a Scorpio Ascendant.  The Aries Rising personality is outgoing, confident and in some cases, rather pushy. Aries want things to take place immediately, while the Scorpio Ascendant personality is much more reserved and tends to listen before they speak. Others seem to pay attention to a Scorpio Rising individual when they speak.  Aries are very out-front and open, while Scorpio has a more hidden, secretive persona to the outside world.  Quite often there is something mysterious about a Scorpio Rising sign.

 

We also have Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto located within the framework of our birth chart as well as part of fortune, moon’s nodes, asteroids, chiron and the list goes on.  The birth chart is a snapshot of the heavens the instant we were born with all of the planets surrounding the earth which would be in the center of the 360° circle what represents our chart diagram.  The circle is divided into 12 sections which are known as the houses and each house represents an area of life.  The planets at birth are located in these houses and their particular energies are released into areas of life and traverse (transits) with our life as we move forward from our birth.

 

Astrology runs much deeper than our quick little description in this article, but we were thinking of those with a new interest in Astrology. We thought we would provide some insight into the workings of Astrology.  The natal or birth chart speaks of our personality and our strengths and challenges.

 

Astrology can also be used as a timing device for ongoing energies in place in our personal life experiences and for so much more.

 

There is much more to Astrology than your sun sign.  It is an endless study and such a valuable tool.  With the proper tools, we can accomplish and/or overcome anything in life. Astrology offers insights to assist with your choices!
